Behind the Scenes & Inspirational Photographers

This will show anyone who is interested, how we as Press photographers or at other times, get the images we get. Sometimes you have almost nothing to work with and that is where the real skill comes in.

I also aim to show you some other photographers that I am looking at, and you might enjoy their work or it might inspire you too, let me know if you have any suggestions.

Photographers that inspire me

AFP Photographer Oli Scarff

Oli Scarff

Oli Scarff works for the photographic agency (AFP - Agence France - Presse) based out of Manchester UK covering North England. Coming 3rd in Sports in the World Press Photographic Competition in 2020, he has a bunch of awards which you can look at on his site below.

Oli Scarff is probably closer to the type of photography i do everyday, his photographs are usually a mixture of great angles usually the one that everyone wants to be at and great contrast & colour to them. His work is A huge inspiration to me. He also uses techniques which you rarely see being used in the context of news like panning techniques on still subjects at a podium, or his ability to capture the feeling of a subject . What I mean by this is that you look at one of his images and you get the sense of emotion from it straight away. He has a great ability to discover stories that maybe are unique to North England but stories off the beaten track which I want to be able to replicate here in terms of subject matter not in terms of copying his pictures.

He one you should take a look at and follow of Insta or check out his website is worth a visit

Peter Hurley

Everyone should know Peter Hurley at this stage, however if you do not you do now :)

Peter Hurley is an award winning NYC based Headshot and Portarit photographer.

In my opinion his portait’s are top end what I like about him is he has openly told us all how he does it. But that does not mean it’s easy, He uses a mixture of lights but recently he has been using constant light sources which I have had a go at when doing portrait work. Using this light source he is able to get perfect skin tones especially in the area of headshots.

His website is worth a visit and if you type him into you tube you will see the sort of thing i’m talking about.

BRENT STIRTON,

It’s hard to know where to start with Brent, I was lucky enough to meet Brent when I was selected to exhibit alongside World Press Photo winners in Dublin, Ireland and part of it meant I was able to meet Brent Stirton. As you can tell from my beaming smile I was very happy to meet him.

Brents work ranges from photographing rangers protecting the wildlife of the Virunga National Park in DMC to the Washington DC riots at Capital Hill on January 6, 2021.

with an extensive history in the documentary world. Brent’s work has been published by: National Geographic Magazine, GEO, Le Figaro, Le Monde, Vanity Fair, Newsweek, Time, The New York Times Magazine, The UK Sunday Times Magazine and many other respected international titles.

He has worked for WWF, CNN, the Ford, Clinton and Gates Foundations, the Nike Foundation and the World Economic Forum. Brent also shoots regular reports for Human Rights Watch. He has done numerous commercial assignments including annual reports for Novartis.

Brent was elected a member of the Young Global Leaders, an affiliate program of the World Economic Forum, in 2008 Brent became a Canon Ambassador, at the time one of 12 photographers representing Canon photography. That program has grown to over 100 members today.

Brent has received 12 awards from World Press Photo and 13 awards from The Pictures of the Year International contest. Doug Mills NYT

Doug Mills works at the White House and mainly covers the pressident of the USA . I think he was suprised when I asked if he would do a picture with me on his short visit to Ireland with former President Trump to Ireland. However he is one of the best photographers around when it comes to photographing Presidents, What i love about the USA is that they like to use different styles and are not afraid to use really dark contrasty images, not that papers here in Ireland do not but in my opinion might no use as many dark contrasty images like they do in the US.

Royal photographer Arthur Edwards.

Arthur Edwards is one of the British Royal photographers which I have had the pleasure of working alongside on his tours of Ireland. Arthur is almost as famous as the Royal family members. If your ever on a royal tour he will often be asked pre the royals arriving to have selfies with members of the public. But behind all of this is a serious photographer who knows the royal family better than most and I feel if you respect those who know more than your self you will gain trust and be a better photographer. His instagram feed is below but if you type in Arthur Edwards into google image you will find his pictures over many decades he’s a True legend.

Royal Photographer Chris Jackson.

Chris Jackson is a Getty Images photographer covering the British Royal Family . He seemed genuine when i asked if i could do a picture with him, on these royal tours the english photographers can come across quite scary but really they do the same job as me and everyone else in the room. Of course Chris oozes cool in my opinion, and he is very good at getting that one picture that says it all, he puts out maybe one or two pictures from a location at least thats what I see, but those pictures are top notch.

| All images are Chris Jacksons copyright and taken by him unless otherwise stated -

he has book out Book ‘Modern Monarchy’ is available below ⬇️⬇️www.amazon.co.uk/Modern-Monarchy-British-Royal-Family/dp/0847864286

Clive Mason - Sports

As you have probably discovered I do not shoot sports However it does not mean that some of the techniques do not cross over because you will find if your just starting out that Photojournalists especially in Ireland do a variety of different subjects and so there are times where sports techniques or angles can be adapted to non sporting events.

But one of the best sports photographers is Clive Mason his biography tells of the many sports he has covered from Olympic Sailing regattas, every winter Olympic games since Salt Lake City in 2002 and probably the pictures i know him for from over 300 Formula One World Championship races and has covered other sports.

It’s worth checking out even if you are not a primary sports shooter.

Jonathan Cherry

I have met Jonathan in the UK and is a photographer who’s work is seen on a regular basis in Simple Magazine, the Gaurdian and many other publications.

He is a really big inspiration to me because of his feature work really appeals to me because of his use of light and detail shots in the features he does for magazines and publications.

Lindsay Adler Photo

Lindsay Adler is a commercial portrait photographer and is known for her striking images.

Her work is the sort of imagery you would see on high impact beauty pictures and in magazines for the top skin care and beauty brands. One of the best parts of her website is where she has educational tips and tricks now they do have to be purchased. however some come with a free guide as a sample so these are worth looking at.
